Dog Agility Training Rules

Dog Agility Training Rules

In order to formulate the set of rules of dog agility training competition, Peter Meanwell, one of the most prestigious canine tamers in England, and winner of the Worning Trials, was put in charge. He is nowadays a well kown judge.John Varley's idea was expanded and modelled by Meanwell along with many kennel clubs. They designed obstacles, made a set of rules, and developed a plan for punctuation. This is how dog agility training got to the central stage in Crufts. A new soprt had been born. Spectators in 1978 were the first ones to enjoy this show.

In 1979, the Kennel club of England published the 1st Code for Agility.

In 1981, the obstacles were standardized, and in the same year the first Agility Championship was celebrated. The judge was Meanwell and the secretary was Peter Lewis, a famous judge. Agility started to expand rapidly and, in 1987, the Canine Society Committee of France, helped by J.P. Petitdidier, creates an official Regulation Code. In 1981, in the city of Rugby, the first agility competition was held, between the teams of the North and the South. Peter Lewis, captain of the South team, won this first encounter,

It was the beginning of agility, which was expanded all over the united Kingdom, until it reached all of Europe and the USA. Agility has never ceased to be practiced or perfected. It is a sport in which the main character is the dog, but it is the owner who enjoys himself the most. In 1987, Peter Lewis was invited to Spain, as a judge in one of the first agility exhibitions. In that occasion, his words were: "Agility is like a sport and has to be seen as pleasure, an opportunity for the dog and the owner to loosen up"
