The name cocker spaniel derives from their ability in woodcock hunting; these dogs were used to lift the preys. The smaller ones were called "Cocking Spaniels". Cocker Spaniels have been popular since the nineteenth century. Becoming considerably more popular during the 30's, and kept being so for about 20 years.
