Child and dog

Choosing a Dog Breed Good with Kids & Dogs that are good with Child and Dog

Nowadays, integration of the dog into the society represents a great contradiction. On one hand it is considered positive for the children's development to be in contact with animals, while on the other, there are cases of dogs that lose control and attack people. First of all, we have to make clear that not all dogs are going to like all kids. Dogs protect the children of their family, but don't feel they need to love the rest of them. This is because the dog sees the child as a pup, and what is the relationship between a dog and a pup in the natural context? Adults only protect their pups, or their leaders, if treated aggressively; they could even attack their own litter, which would not be natural. Nonetheless, dogs' protection sense disappears when the pup is not close, for they might be a pup from an enemy.

Consequently, the fact that dogs accept children-which is what normally happens- is because the dog is a good animal and because its owner has educated it and it knows it is not supposed to chase children. We also have to add the fact that many children don't know canine rules and behave inn a way that can make a peaceful dog nervous. Besides, children tend to be noisy and active. The problem is that the dog can't warn them in any way but by growling, and the next step is to bite, although in most of the cases this is only as a warning. Parents must teach their children dogs are not toys, children must learn they have to be gentle and respectful to them.

Other important factor in aggressive reactions: predatory instinct. Many parents are not aware of this, but it has to do with most of the dramatic incidents in children's life.

Most of the dogs keep their ancestors' instinct. These instincts make them chase-and in some cases bite- everything that is a prey, or behaves as such; his means anything that is agile, small and makes high-pitched noises. This explains why a cat, a hen or a child is triggers of aggressive behavior. Evidently, the solution is to teach children not to shriek or run when there's a dog. Generally, dogs get used to the company of children. Even though some breeds are better I this than others, you have to always pay attention to the dog's personality. For example, German Shepherds, Dobermans and Rottweilers are great with children, but there have been cases of ill educated specimens that have attacked children. For the child and the dog to know and respect each other, they have to grow together. Small dogs tend to be a bit more apprehensive with children.
