Canine Leptospirosis

Canine Leptospirosis in Dog

This illness, also called the Stuttgart Canine Infection, is caused by a specific bac

terial species, Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae. There are many types of Leptospiras in rodents and also in the water. Therefore, hunting dogs are particularly at risk. The first sign of leptospirosis is usually a weakening of the front part of the body, making it difficult for the dog to go up the stairs. Then, there comes a state of prostration (a condition marked by dizziness and nausea and weakness caused by depletion of body fluids and electrolytes), the eyes begin to get red and teary – as with distemper – and the dog's condition worsens, especially when there is diarrhea and vomiting. The yellow eyes and a similar color in the back part of the tongue are sure signals of a severe ictericia. It is always accompanied by an inflammation in the kidneys, with presence of albumen in the urine. Nevertheless, if treatment is started on time, the chances of getting cured are relatively good. Leptospirosis has a special importance, as some pathological agents can affect us humans.
Important: In cases of Leptospirosis, it is very recommended to administer a preventive vaccine although the effects are not as guaranteed as with the other illnesses mentioned before.
