Train a Dog to Come Teaching the COME Command

Remember that when you tell your dog to come, you are actually telling him to leave what he is doing to come back to you. This is one of the most important parts of the exercise. It is necessary for your dog to turn away from his distraction and look at you (and move towards you too). The more you can get your dog to do this, the more you will be able to do this anytime and anywhere.Lets review the shaping steps:

  1. Hold your dog on a leash and do not let him go where it is that he wants. Once he has turned away from his distraction to look at you, treat him.
  2. If it takes over sixty seconds for your dog to look back at you then you are standing too close to his distraction. Walk further away from it.
  3. Once the dog turns toward you easily, run backwards as he turns to look at you and let him catch you. Click him as he is walking to you and put a snack at your feet for him.
  4. Put the snack between your own feet, this way when he takes it, it will be easy for you to catch him.
  5. Learn how to hold your dog's collar and lead him with it, treat him for tolerating it.
  6. Mark the behavior of come when you have your dog by the collar.
  7. Practice doing this in different places in order to change the distractions and the environment that you are in.
  8. Once you have this down, practice it with a longer leash and repeat the whole process again.
  9. Allow the leash to drag on the ground until your dog fully understands your order.
  10. 10.Be creative with the rewards you give him in order to create expectation in him.
