There are three main types of bark control collars. The Ultrasonic, the Static Shock, and the Citronella Spray. Of these three the static shock version is the most controversial as it causes the most pain to the dog wearing it. After this is the sonic unit which emits a high frequency sound that only the dog can hear. And lastly the most "humane" the citronella spray, which is a device that sprays citronella onto the dog's face when he is barking incessantly.
