Very high temperatures can cause your dog to suffer from heat stroke even if it isn't exposed to direct sunlight and so you should be sure to place any dog kennel under a shaded area even if you have a cover over the top. Another way to help your dog cope with the heat is to connect its dog house to a AC unit that will keep it cool.

Very low temperatures can result in your dog getting frostbitten so you must be sure to provide your dog with adequate warmth during the harsh winter months. There are many ways that you could go about doing this; one is to insulate your dog's house or to have it heated by a climate control system. And if those things are not options then you might consider getting an indoor kennel for those rugged winter months.
If you have frequent visitors, no fence or live in an area frequented by wild animals then setting up a backyard dog kennel is very recommendable but be sure to go about it in a intelligent way so that you don't end up with more problems than you bargained for.
