It's considered a lucky dog but it still doesn't mean that you can forget about it's daily walk. If the yard is at the front of the house you should always keep the door closed or even hang a sign up which reads "beware dogs", or something similar, even if your dog is a small dog. There are people who are literally scared of dogs.

The fence of your yard should be high enough and made in a certain way so that the dog is not able to jump over pass through. Always keep your pet in a dog house or a dog kennel.

It is recommendable to have your mailbox placed in front of your door and not in the yard, because for the most part, the relation between the mail man and the dog is not usually a kind one.
