Golden Retriever Training Tip When to forbid somethingIt is very important that your puppy knows how to relate punishment with his "bad behavior". Any mistake in the timing or in the severity of the punishment can be fatal. If he does not understand the order or he misunderstands it, make sure that you gave the order well in order for him to understand it. If the puppy has done something he shouldn't and you want to make him understand, you shouldn't dare him or express your discontent, as he won't understand it and will most probably be afraid of your reaction. You have to step in as soon as your puppy does something he shouldn't. Don't let him chew on a wire, but don't scream at him in panic "No, give it to me, shoo!" because he might stop for a while, but then he'll go right back to it. Go up to him, and, expressing security, firmness and emphasis, say "No!" or "Shoo!" while removing the wire from his mouth. Most Golden react well to this emphatic "No!" expressed with an audible tone of challenge. If you arrive late to the scene and you see what he has done, you can get mad, but it wouldn't make any sense to challenge the dog. A punishment that he does not understand and can not relate to what he has done will destroy the confidence the dog has in you. Try to avoid that inner laughter you might have from seeing what the funny little puppy has done while at the same time trying to forbid something. Your dog knows how to distinguish whether you are saying something seriously or not. |
