The basket and blanket

Golden Retriever Puppy in
The Basket and Blanket

In the beginning don't get involved in heavy spending because you will have the see what your Retriever's likes are. On the market, you will find a wide range of specialized products:

  • A plastic container (easy to clean, even with flee infestation, at least 80 x 100 cm);
  • A mattress for a baby bed, with cloth covering (soft and with a washable color, big enough for the dog to stretch out);
  • A wicker basket (big enough for your Golden to enter without having to curl up, it at least has to be 80 to 100 cm);
  • A wooden grate, a dog bed;
  • A polyethylene-stuffed pillow. You have to try it out: some Golden Retrievers like it, others don't;
  • A thick, washable blanket on the floor.

Comb/Brush: For a puppy a comb or brush is enough, with which you can

extract the dry filth from the hairs.

Toys/rope to play with: All dog toys you give your dog to play with must be safe. A simply innocent stuffed animal can become a snowy sight and the small part can be dangerous because they can be swallowed easily. When flexible plastic parts are swallowed, together with the gastric juices, they form hard lumps in the stomach, which, in the worst of cases, have to be operated. However, cork toys are harmless. Puppies like to play with cotton ropes or with a tennis ball wrapped up in a sock.

Car accessories: If the dog travels in the back of a van or pick-up truck, you need a "vetbed" as a cushion. So that the dog doesn't slide too much, you will need to get a car box which is at least half the size of the empty space. Later on, you will find that box useful because you can place your luggage there without the risk of them falling on your dog. You will also have to get a security net. Find out if your car dealer sells them. If your puppy travels in the back seat, secure him with an animal dog safety belt, which you should be able to find in a specialized shop.

Doll and whistle for the puppy:
In the beginning you will need a small doll for the dog (about 7 ounces), and a loud-enough, simple whistle.
