So Your Golden Retriever Doesn't Get Bored

Prevent a Golden Retriever form Getting Bored

There are many ways of entertaining your Golden to demand physical and mental reaction, to improve his obedience and to strengthen the family bonds. You'll be amazed to see how much your dog can do. Let's start with the typical daily walk, which you have to spice up with more distractions. Is your walk is too monotonous, always following the same route, at the same rhythm without any distractions along the way, soon your dog will start looking for other more interesting attractions, but maybe less favorable. He'll start digging into rabbit dens, or start chasing birds, or simply vanish in the park. If so, your walks are boring! During your walks, use dog toys and think about your dog and his needs. You can include brief obedience exercises; maybe you can get to know a new neighborhood or organize hide-and-seek games or simply

splash around with him in a nearby stream.

On bike or horse accompanied by your Golden: Your Golden can follow you when you ride your bicycle, he can run along with you when you go horse riding, but of course the dog has to be old enough and the horse and dog have to know each other quite well. Before venturing out like that though, your vet has to make sure the dog is in good physical conditions. This includes having an x-ray to see if he has hip or elbow dysplasia. Start out with short stretches, at a normal rhythm and on easy paths. Little by little, go increasing the demands. But bear in mind that the more you train your dog, the more he will demand from you every day. Training for resistance with constant, but not exaggerated, jogging, helps improve and maintain your dog's physical and mental condition (and yours as well).
