Hierarchies amongst Human Beings and Dogs

Although you can't compare a human being/dog "pack" to a natural pack, the dog does bring with him the need and capacity to integrate. A clear order of precedents gives a dog that is sure of himself clear lines and limits, and to the insecure dog a basic frame in which he can move around feeling secure.

All the members have to assume the most elevated positions. However, you are not the boss because you have a older voice, or because you're always giving out orders, or because you inflict punishment; no, in a clear hierarchical pack order, the leader does not have to continuously defend his position turning to violence and pressure. You will always be the on to determine the moments of entertainment for your dog. You will decide when, where, how long the playtime will last or take place. If you frequently give in to your Golden Retriever's bothersome intentions to play, you will have opened a crack in your position of leader.

In a family meeting establish what will be allowed and what will not. A clear line will help your puppy, from the beginning, to evaluate you and evaluate certain situations. Since unclear indications can be confusing, it is best to immediately and consequently forbid anything you don't want him to do.
