Golden Retriever eyes

Golden EYE Retriever

Diseases to the back of the eye and to the retina (progressive retinal atrophy, PRA, and retinal dysplasia, RD) are actually rare in Golden Retrievers. Dogs that have been attacked can go blind. But cataracts, ectropion and entropion are more frequent. A distinction has to be made between hereditary cataracts (HC) and old age cataracts, which somewhat cloud the vision. Ectropion means that the eyelid is outwardly inverted, and produces frequent conjunctivitis; conversely, Entropion means that the eyelid

is inwardly inverted – the eyelashes that enter the eye produce a lot of tearing and consequently a lot of pain. A dark secretion from the eyes can be a symptom of follicles, a formation of small blisters in the third eyelid, which can also be caused by an acute irritation of conjunctivitis. Golden Retrievers that are used for reproduction shouldn't have PRA, RD, HC, ectropion, or entropion.

If your dog constantly blinks or half-closes his eyes; if he's got photophobia (pain in the eye resulting from exposure to bright light), they might be symptoms of a serious disease, for example something strange in his eye, or a cornea injury or glaucoma. You have to go the vet immediately!
