Being accompanied and being alone

Golden Retriever Companion
 Golden Retrievers Alone

The Golden Retriever would like to go with you everywhere you go, from the daily walk to the shower to your daily commute. Let your dog know that he can't go with you to work, unless you are actually allowed to do so. If you can, make sure your colleague's don't feed him anything and that they give him as little attention as possible. Nobody likes to have a forty-kilo dog sitting on their recently ironed skirt or a paw print on their white shirt.
Your Golden Retriever will also want to go along with you on your other day-to-day activities: shopping, visiting friends, picking the kids up from school, family get-togethers, vacations, many things are possible for a well-educated Golden.

However, the puppy needs to learn to be able to stay alone for short periods. First, leave him alone when he sleeps, but stay relatively near. After that, leave him alone while going off to do short errands, like taking out the trash. Every time make that period longer. Give him something to do, like something to bite or a box with a ball inside. Don't make such a big deal when you leave. Likewise, when you return, greet him unceremoniously. Your dog will be sure that you'll always return. Try not to greet him more effusively when you return after a long time than when you return after a five-minute absence.
