Basic equipment for your puppyIf you skim through specialized catalogues, you will most probably find many useful things, but also many that are not. Of course, your personal taste will have a lot to do when making the selection. Indispensable equipment: The food and water bowl(s): Buy two heavy, firm bowls, which is big enough for when your dog has grown up. A simple plastic bowl is not convenient because dogs like to stick their paws into them and drag them all along the kitchen floor. I´ve had good results with bowls that have the possibility of adjusting the height. A grown dog should not eat directly form floor height because he has to swallow upwards. Being upright when eating, with his legs straight, is good physical exercise for a good posture. The collar and leash: Good results have been obtained from nylon reps collars approximately 1 cm wide which closes with a snap button. These collars are useful until the dog is about 5 or 6 months old. Along with that is a one-cm-wide leash with a light yet safe latch. The Moxon leash, also known as the Retriever rope, is a choke leash without a stop, and therefore, not appropriate for a puppy. Its use is only appropriate, with instructions and in the right moment, for training older dogs. Dog Enclosures: A good cedar dog house or outdoor chain link dog kennel is always useful. |
