Veterinarian RiversideHelping people with multi-pet households to get their pets to live together in harmony has got to be one of the biggest challenges we face here in our Riverside veterinarian clinic. One couple was relating their personal story to us about their cat and dog. Bobby their Spaniel used to attack Scratch their tabby cat when he could get away with it. Their friendship was never too bad and most of the time they got along together once they had taught them to be respectful of one another. They had different problems off and on with their dog and cat due to their unique natures. As you are probably aware dogs will eat cat feces, so they had to be sure to keep the cat's litter in a place completely inaccessible to their dog. They had to not only give their cat and dog their own food/water bowls, beds (in different locations) and their own areas for meal times, relaxing and playing but also provide safe areas inside the house where each of them could go if they was being harassed by the other. They found that sometimes their cat bothered their dog and gave him a really hard time but that was something that the dog would usually deal with by barking to let the cat know that its attention was undesired. It is really a question of teaching your pets to have respect for each other and to give each other the space required. There are many things that you as the owner can do in order to help this process and for good tips and ideas just take a trip to your local Riverside veterinarian. |
