Choking Dog Heimlich maneuver
If your SAR dog should have food, a ball or some other foreign object firmly stuck in its throat, that you cannot simply remove with your fingers then the best way to unblock your dog's wind pipe or throat is with the Heimlich maneuver. To perform the Heimlich maneuver on a dog it is important to take into account the size of the dog. Depending on the size of the dog you will need to adjust the positioning of your hands and the amount of force that you apply when attempting to force the blockage out of the dog's throat.
The explanation here is for a medium to large sized dog.
Wrap one arm around the dog letting the head, shoulders and forearms hang forward. Then close your hand forming a fist and close your other hand around this fist. Position your fist between the dog's navel and rib cage and then quickly and powerfully thrust inwards and upwards. Do this as many times as is necessary to dislodge the blockage.
By pressing in and up just under the dog's diaphragm you will be compressing the air in its lungs and forcing it out through its mouth which should also eject the foreign object. If your SAR dog is still not breathing once you have removed the object then begin AR (artificial respiration) and if it has no pulse then immediately begin CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation). Seek immediate medical attention.
