Intervention planOnce the unit Leader has checked out the situation and after recognizing the disaster sight, the Leader will have to decide on an initial action plan. He will then have to decide on the most effective plan of action and get going as quickly as possible taking into account a number of different factors: - The number of team members and their respective jobs.
- Disaster sight size.
- Approximate number of victims.
- Know the possible risks.
- Know what type of search will have to be done – subterraneous, confined etc.
- Means of equipment and material available such as transportation, lighting etc.
The strategies used will be modified in each moment of the process that the search and rescue dogs will do. This job obviously will be determined by the amount of experience and ability the unit Leader has and what has been seen in the conduct of the dogs. It is also important to point out that the search and rescue units would not be able to get all the work done that they do without the help of other professional groups that have the same objective in mind which ultimately is to save as many lives as possible. |
