Something many people who leave there dogs with us in our Omaha pet boarding place fail to realize is that if the desire to hunt is not channeled in the right way (by allowing the dog to play hunting games with toys for example), the dog will then start to build up bad habits and get into a lot of trouble by getting into inappropriate hunting chases and even causing damage. Border collies are some of the best hunting dogs in the world. Border collies get excited when seeing a person running by them and set off to chase the person. A trained and friendly dog will chase at a person with no intention whatsoever to hurt or bite at him or her. However, there are some dogs that bite people when they get close to them, especially if they are excited about the chase or if they are afraid of the stranger. If you have a breed that does this, you must take the necessary measures to train and stimulate your dog in other ways so that the dog learns to control this type of behavior. Remember also that there are people that are afraid of dogs and it is your responsibility to take all the necessary precautions. Cars speeding by are an excellent opportunity for a dog that loves chasing, but very dangerous. Some dogs become obsessed with chasing after running cars so much so that they will continue on with this behavior even in cases of dogs that have been badly hurt because of it. This is a very dangerous game for both the dog and driver and it must be avoided at all cost.
