The Phoenix Dog Grooming service we use has given us a lot of information on ear infections and the things that can cause them. We took our dog in to get his regular check up and told our groomer that the dog was scratching at one of his ears a lot. He checked our dog and told us that we needed to take the dog to our veterinarian so he could get the adequate treatment. Later on our veterinarian gave us more information on the topic and told us that our dog had otitis externa, which probably occurred from water being trapped in our dog's ear canal. We were told that the wet environment in the dog's ear creates the perfect breeding ground for fungus and bacteria that leads to a very painful feeling, swelling, redness and infection. This can occur to dogs that have long earflaps because there isn't a lot of air circulation and moisture gets trapped inside. When we took our dog back to our Phoenix Dog Grooming salon, they were very happy to see that our dog was back to normal health and that the ear infection had gone away. They informed us of other things that can be present in a dog's ear like ear mites, which can be present in earwax. This type of problem can also cause a dog to shake his head or scratch at his ears. They told us that the way to see if this is by removing the earwax from the dog's ears and checking it on a piece of white paper. If little white specks are evident it's an indication of ear mites.
