Our Louisville Dog Grooming salon told us that our dog had a very oily coat. We were told that there are certain breeds that simply have oily hair coats but that in the case of these breeds it often times causes matter to accumulate easily and causes odors. When this happens all the dog needs is a good bath and the right type of shampoo to resolve the problem. In the case of our dog we were told to make sure to brush his coat out regularly as this would help to remove some of the matter, which was causing the odors. They also told us that a lot of oil on a dog's coat can cause the hair to become rancid and is more prevalent in certain breeds like some spaniels. This can actually turn into a problem causing what is known as primary seborrhea that is evident when the dog has yellow brown scales around its ears, elbows and hocks. We have a Cocker spaniel so we were very interested in finding out about it. Our Louisville Dog Grooming salon told us not to worry though, that our dog hadn't gotten to that stage but that when this problem does happen to dogs they recommend the owners take the dog to the veterinarian so he or she can determine the exact condition of the dog and get the necessary treatment. In some cases veterinarians will prescribe certain medicated shampoos with coal tar extracts as well as some over the counter prescriptions, but that either way the owner is required to follow the direct instructions of the veterinarian. They also told us that the Louisville Dog Grooming salons make sure to check a dog's skin and report them to the pet owners.
