Many people ignore a dog's dewclaws since these don't actually touch the ground when the dog walks but they can get caught in grass or weeds when a dog is running around in a field etc, so it is still important to get them clipped. A dog's nail also has what is known as the quick, which can usually be seen except in the case of dogs with dark nails. In dogs with dark nails it is a little trickier as cutting the quick can cause the dog's nail to bleed.
