my boy has mucousy diarehafor the last 2-3 days my 4yr old corgi has been poopin in the house, which he never does. i just started givin him just dry food last night instead of givin him dry and wet mixed to see if that will change his stool. i cant understand why this just happened. i dont think its the food casue he has had the mix for months. the only thing i can think of is he doesnt seem to be drinkin alot of water while outside. any suggestions?
Hi 77 and thanks for coming to SeeFido!
As he is drinking lots of water outside and my guess is you are getting tons of rain like the rest of the country, he has a good chance that he now has coccidia or giardia.......or both! For now, switch to the bland diet and see if that helps but if it is one of those, you will need medication to get rid of them. So most likely the vet will be needed as I don't think the meds are available OTC.... The bland diet consists of boiled white rice and boiled rinsed hamburger......2/3 rice to 1/3 meat.....add a couple tablespoons canned mashed sweet potatoes and a couple tablespoons active culture yogurt. Feed the same amount as you would dog food......Should help get things solid quickly.......Check with your vet and ask if you can just bring in a stool sample and get the meds. Unfortunately, neither coccidia or giardia are easy to catch on a fecal.......hopefully the vet is willing to listen to your description!
Re: my boy has mucousy diarehahi there...
My son is 11 month old and is experiencing frequent loose stools with partially digested food and mucus in it since three days. I am really concerned about what needs to be done. Also how can one determine whether its viral, parasitic or bacterial infection?
Re: my boy has mucousy diarehaJohn..........I am confused. Are you saying the dog has been this way for three days or since he was three days old? It could be worms or parasites......either way, you probably need to take a stool sample in to the vet and have it tested to find out what it is and what meds to get him started on......If this has been going on a long long time and there is a very foul smell and a nasty bright yellow color to the stool, you are most likely looking at Pancreatic Insufficiency and that is not something to fool around with...
