Canidae ALS changes formula and mfg?

Postby imetal » Mon Jul 14, 2008 11:06 pm

Ok, so there is tons of talk in net land and at the feed stores in regards to Canidae changing their formula. I have seen the changes and I'm not so sure about it...

Also they are now using Diamond Pet Food MFG and this really makes me uneasy. Granted I know everything is under control now but you just never know or can feel that trust again after the big scare, etc...

One feed store told me they are mad at Canidae and feel they are making a very bad move with the change of formula and signing up with Diamond. He said he might even stop carrying Canidae. He said its nothing more than a money/profit thing and that Canidae will be seen in Petco/Petsmarts soon.

So I'm going to change my dog's food to Innova Adult. I bought a 6.6# bag and will transition and see how she does on it.

Anyone else have thoughts on the Canidae change????

I really don't know... I used to use one of the Diamond products but Tasha decided she didn't like it anymore so that ended that.... Some of their foods are quite good and they do manufacture a number of well known foods... such as the Chicken Soup line! This is a tough one.....I guess it comes down to what you feel most comfy with and what your dog wants......as long as it is not New York strip with baked potato!!

well i have been doing a transition to Innova Adult and its going fine. I think Canidae "old" ALS is very similar to Innova Adult anyway so I dont forsee any issues.

But I did see the new ALS 35lb bag at the feed store. It costs $48. And they also have a 44lb bag that costs $56. So Canidae raised their prices on the bags of food. They use to be very reasonable for the quality food but now with the new formula and new size bags, and their reasoning to change everything, i'm not so sure about this company anymore.

well i was out with my dog today swimming and the such and i noticed she started to eat some grass. then a few mins later she threw up. a ton!

since i've been switching her food i wonder if its upsetting her stomach? i started switching last tuesday.

25% Innova 75% Canidae for 3 days

50% Innova 50% Canidae for 3 days

Just today started 75% Innova 25% Canidae

So i'm unsure what the symptoms are for a dog that doesn't take well to a food change. Her stools seem a tad soft but nothing bad. Thoughts?

She simply may have wanted to empty things out. May not really have anything to do with the food. If she does it all the time, then the food is not agreeing with her....If so, try something else.......and be sure to tell her about all the poor starving dogs in the world who would love to eat the good food mommy puts down for her! It doesn't really work with kids but who knows, maybe the dog will fall for it!

well she seems to be taking to Innova Adult well. I've switched to 100% Innova.

I was at a Pet Supples + and I saw a huge display of the new Canidae so i asked the manager there how it was doing. His response was "its like the scare all over again, people are avoiding Canidae like its the bubonic plague!" wow.

What in the world happened? Well according to this manager bags of new Canidae have been returned because its giving dogs the runs and making them throw up, etc... the manager felt like it was more like internet gossip that is killing Canidae. He finds nothing wrong with it and doesn't feel this "slight" formula change would upset tummies. Yet he does nto even own a dog

Anyone out there feeding Canidae NEW formulas please post your experience. Is anyone out there!?

I switched for my personal reasons but I didn't think the change was that drastic. I'm glad I did switch...

Sometimes these managers and the pet food companies do not realize a very small change CAN throw a dog off.....Depends on what that change is! And as that manager does not own a dog, he is not really a good source of information, he wants to sell it. Have you contacted the company and let them know what your experience has been? The more who call or write in will do more good to let them know what is going on.... It does help that your girl did find something she is happy with and is doing fine on it. That matters the most!

Canidae did try to inform consumers of the formula change so that they could transition appropriately, as they were aware of what they were doing with the formula change.

Many people have reported back favorably about the new formula - whats the update from those of you who have used it?

I've been using the new formula, and don't have any complaints. My dogs seem fine with it, and I haven't noticed accidents, diarrhea, excessive needs to go out. I got a 35lb bag for $34, which isn't great, but it isn't too bad either??
