Lakeland TerrierThe Lakeland Terrier is easily confused with the Wales terrier, but the two breeds are different because of the shape of the head and the color. The Lakeland Terrier has a shorter head and its color is tan with a golden tonality. It comes from the England Lakes region and it was selected from the black and tan terrier, also called pattersdale terrier and the bedlington. Thanks to the rigorous selection, the dogs acquired a noble aspect and the breed consolidated gradually and it was recognized in 1928. At first, the Lakeland terrier was destined for hunting and it was especially used for hunting in fox burrows. It accompanied the packs of hounds in the fox persecution. But it also knows how to find the prey in the undergrowth and pushes it to the fusils. It is a good worker in water since its hair is impermeable. However, it is a good pet dog. In England especially it is most appreciated more and more. Despite its natural aggressiveness, at home it is a nice partner it is trustful and quiet. But most terriers have a great need for exercise. Its hair is dense and tight with a thicker internal layer, it should be groomed regularly. Size: 34-38 cm. Weight: 6-8 kg. Colors: black and tan, blue and tan (1), wheaten (2), gray (red mixed with black), liver, blue or black. White patches are accepted on the chest and feet. The tan color must have a golden tone; the red or tan dark patches are a defect. The hair must be cut twice a year generally in spring and autumn. It is done as with most hard-haired terriers, except on the nose bridge where the hair is kept to stress the shape of the head (3). Besides the hair cut, it is advisable to put the dog on a table and groom its hair carefully. The person in charge must take the skin with the tip of the left-hand fingers and with the thumb and the right-hand index, pull the hair slowly in the direction of the hair in bundles of hair. Starting on the shoulders the person in charge must work systematically and with patience on the back, the sides and the tail. In the double chin, the hair has to be carefully cut to give a happy line to the neck. The hair on the leg has to be cut to give them a robust appearance. |
