King Charles Knight Breed Origins and Caracteristics
This breed is very similar to the King Charles Spaniel, but it is better than the original type. In 1926, the American participants in the Cruft's show, the most famous canine exhibition in London, highlighted that the King Charles Spaniel presented great differences with the dogs of the painting of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. One of the participants, Rosswell Eldridge, offered a prize of 25 pounds sterling to the breeder that could get the original type. The English devoted to this challenge and in 1928, only two years later, the King Charles Knight standard was established, which is kept until our days. This breed is different from the King Charles Spaniel for the shape of its head. The King Charles Knight has a flat forehead, longer jaws and the nose bridge is approximately 4 cm, while the King Charles Spaniel has a convex forehead that sticks out over the eyes and the nose bridge is so short that the space between the forehead, the eyes and the nose bridge forms a cavity so small that there is only space for a marble.
The King Charles Knight Spaniel has the same character as the King Charles Spaniel. It is friendly, mischievous, it is a good companion; it loves children and it is also brave and loyal to its master. It has well-developed hunting instincts, especially for hunting birds.
Size: 30-35 cm (but the standard is not clearly fixed). Weight: 4.5 – 8.1 kg. Colors: the same four varieties as for the King Charles Spaniel, but with other denominations. Black and Tan is a black bright dog with mahogany patches on the snout, around the eyes and on the legs, the internal part of the ears and the tail. Ruby is a reddish brown; Bleinheim (1) is pearl white, with reddish brown patches and with a regular drawing on the head and Tricolor (2) is pearl white with black patches and small mahogany patches on the cheeks, the internal part of the ears, around the eyes and on the forehead.
The hair is long, with a pretty texture and slightly wavy. The ears are very covered with hair the legs have bangs; most of the times the tail is not cut and has a tuft. The hair has to be combed and groomed every day.
