Trail Hound Dog Breed

Trail Hound Dog Breed

Great Britain

The trail hound, which does not have an official standard, is essentially a foxhound that for a longtime has been used in England for a particular purpose: participate in the tracking contests in several miles. Over the years, the foxhound has been crossed with the sight hound and the pointers so it could develop qualities of speed and agility; an ability that would let it have a good role in these tracking competitions.

It is not internationally recognized as a breed. However the typical trail hound is pure fiber and muscles and each rib and vertebrae can be guessed through the skin. The hair that is naturally short is shaved before the competition. Most colors are accepted and the most common ones are black, white, fawn or gray with white.

The height at withers varies a lot; the mean height is 55 to 65 cm.
