Sussex Spaniel Dog Breed

Great Britain

The Sussex Spaniel is a bit heavy, robust and docile, it is one of the animals that are expensive to see (there are plenty of specimens of this breed, even in its native country). It has existed as recognized breed since the 18th century, while it has changed a bit with the years. Because there were a few specimens for breeding, it was necessary to cross it with other breeds to avoid excessive breeding of its own. The clumber Spaniel was one of the most used breeds in the procedure, that is why the physical constitution is very similar in both breeds.

The Sussex Spaniel must be stout and muscular, but with less weight than the clumber. The eyes must have a sweet and pensive expression in a certain way. It does not have very big ears, but they are thicker than most water dogs. The back is long and flat. The legs are strong and muscular. The tail must be cut although not short; it must have frayed edges and it is carried down. The hair is abundant and straight; it has many frayed edges in the hand, ears, and hindquarters.

The color is brown with golden shades at the tip of the hair (a characteristic detail of the breed). It may weigh 20 kg and the height at withers is 38 to 40 cm.
