Schillerstövare Dog Breed

Schillerstövare Dog Breed

Sweden

Although it is not as numerous as the Hamiltonstövare, the Schillerstövare is one of the most used hounds in Sweden to find and track the prey. It is more common to find it in the western regions of the country. Despite its similarity with the Hamiltonstövare, the Schillerstövare descends in part from different hunting dogs. Its ancestors were, mostly, dogs imported from the south of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and since these animals were very similar in type, it was not necessary to cross them more with other breeds, the Schillerstövare was formed as a breed before the generally ubiquitous Hamiltonstövare.

The main difference between the two breeds is that the Schillerstövare weighs a bit less than the Hamiltonstövare, although this does not make it look taller. It has a very long head and a marked stop, bright dark eyes and flexible ears which are carried close to the head. The head is long and strong; the body is vigorous with a deep chest. Its tail is straight or saber-shaped; the hair is thick and short.

The color is invariably cinnamon with a black saddle. The black patches are not allowed, except for, if any, a mark on the chest or toes. The height at withers must be 50 to 60 cm in males and 46 to 57 in females.
