Sar Planina Shepherd Dog Breed

Sar Planina Shepherd Dog Breed

Yugoslavia

For centuries, the Sar Planina has been used as Shepherd in the Yugoslavian mountainous regions as a sheepdog. It is rarely seen in the canine exhibitions but the local breed is zealously protected against any intermixture with foreign blood.

It is considered that the Sar Planina is the surviving link between the old molossus dogs and the modern Shepherd breeds. As a confirmation it could be compared to the Hovawart. The head is slightly convex in profile, with a stop or depression that is barely noted, long and powerful snout and oval-shaped and dark eyes. The fallen ears are medium size, and the tail that is put high is taken curved upwards (sometimes it is docked). The hair is thick and abundant, shorter on the head and legs but particularly abundant in the tail.

The color is wolf gray, sometimes a bit white in the legs and chest. The height at withers is 56 to 58 cm.
