Picardy Spaniel Dog Breed
Épagneul Picard
The Picardy Spaniel is used a lot like a pointing dog in the salt marshes of the North of France. It was known in the 19th century and competed in the first French canine exhibitions. Regarding its constitution, it is different from the British Spaniels because of its less weight and long legs –it is something like a cross between the English Springer Spaniel and the English Setter.
In comparison with the closest relatives that it has with the French Spaniels, the Picardy Spaniel has a brown nose and amber eyes. The ears are put much higher than most of other water dogs. The tail which is docked should not be too long and it must have the shape of a long "S". The hair is abundant (especially in the ears, chest and tail) and slightly wavy on the tips. The hair on the head is a bit softer and finer than the rest of the body.
The color is grayish blackbird blue with chestnut patches, especially on the head and feet. The height at withers is 55 to 60 cm and sometimes males exceed this last measurement for a few centimeters.
