Owcharka Dog BreedSoviet Union The Russian Shepherd dogs are grouped under the name of Owcharka; there are at least four different varieties. All descend from Pomeranian dogs, but since then, they have been bred with other breeds according to the features demanded by an adequate Shepherd dog. In the Caucasus, for instance, there was a need of a really strong Owcharka, and the primitive type was bred with the Mastiff so that the dog could defend herds against wolves. This peculiar breeding had also the advantage to keep the coat dense and warm, essential for the harsh Russian weather. Other Owcharka varieties are a bit smaller, generally of a less weighted build, except for the long coat variety on Southern Russia, but not with such an abundant coat as the Caucasus Owcharka. The latter was famous for submitting easily to obedience. The color is very varied: the Caucasian Owcharka, shown in the picture, is normally of a greyish deer color, but also white or even multicolored. Its height at withers is about 6 cm. |
