There are less long-haired German pointers than the short-haired and wire-haired varieties. It differs in type by its softer profile; it looks more like a Setter and it could be described as a coarser Irish Setter or a Drentse Patrijshond. The eyes must be as dark as possible. The hair of the body must be 3 to 5 cm long, but it is longer on the neck, chest, muscles and abdomen. The legs and the tail must look frayed edges. It is not necessary that the tail is docked in part.

The color is brown, or white with brown patches. The long-haired variety may be much taller than other German pointers: the height at withers is usually more than 63 cm and it can reach 70 cm.

The main difference between this German pointer and the drahthaar is the coat hair, which is longer and abundant. However it is rougher. The eyes are usually light brown, but the tone may vary according to the color of the coat as long as they are not yellow. The tail may be docked to the half the natural length. The coat is dark brown, with white patches.

The height at withers is 60 to 66 cm in males and bit less in females.
