It is understandable that the Little Lion Dog be confused with a less correct breed like the Poodle (water dog). However, its similarity with the poodle is more superficial, as both breeds are used to having their coat sheared. Despite that, regarding poodles, the fact to shearing it in a in a lion-like fashion had only practical meansing in the past, it is probable that the main reasons for owners to have their Little Lion Dogs sheared was to provide originality and a certain "lion" resemblance (Löwchen meaning "small lion" in German). The adopted style to shear its coat consisted in leaving a lion mane and a crest on the tail end, while the coat oin the rest of the body was left very short.

It is believed that this breed was originated in the French Mediterranean, and that it is closely related to some other small races breeds near to that zone area – the Maltese breed is probably the most known. – Despite the fact that the Little Lion Dog is known as a breed for since some hundreds of years ago, it has never been popular.

The smooth, abundant, and dense coat may be of any color. There is nothing certain in matters of with regards to elevation its height, but its weight is usually between 5 and 6 kilos.
