The Kuvasz is a very old Hungarian breed, which name means "guardian of the peace" in Turkish. Today, the Kuvasz is used as a guard dog, although there was a time when it was commonly used for hunting. It is said that as a house dog and company dog is friendly, affectionate and intelligent, and moreover, very alert. Besides from being sometimes in North American dog shows; it is not that common outside its native country. It is possible that its great resemblance to the Pyrenean Mountain dog, which is even more impressive.

A typical Kuvasz has a dignifying, strong look, and very tall. The form of the head has great importance: it has to be noble and expressive, and the snout must be neither elegant nor rough. It has brown eyes with a burning expression. The tail is at a lower level, except when the dog is on alert mode, when it rises it slightly; the tail end has normally a hook form. The coat is short on the head, ears, and paws, but long, undulated and very rough in the other parts of its anatomy, especially around the neck, on the tail and the posterior part of the legs. The color is pure white, but ivory tones are acceptable. Its height at withers is from 71 to 75 cm for male dogs and from 66 to 70 for female dogs.
