King Charles Spaniel Dog Breed

Great Britain

The King Charles Spaniel was during some time very popular, especially in Great Britain and it was much more common than its closest relative the cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Now the things have changed. We must remember two points when studying these breeds related to each other: the cavalier has kept loyal to the primitive British type and the King Charles hardly justifies its name in any aspect.

It is true that Charles II whose name was used to name the breed, had luxury Spaniels, but the interbreeding with East Asian luxury dogs that gave birth to the King Charles Spaniel, did not start until a century and a half later. Nowadays, the breed does not have much of Spaniel blood. Despite its irresistibly superior expression and quite calm disposition, there are few specimens in most countries.

The Spaniel King Charles is different from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mainly because of its flat nose and frequently because its size is more manageable.

There are four varieties of color: black and cinnamon, Blenheim (white and chestnut), tricolor (white, black and cinnamon) and ruby (uniform intense red). In the standard of the breed the height is not specified, but the weight is 3.600 to 6.300 kg.
