The Italian hound is related to the greyhound and foxhound type of breeds from the North of Europe, but it is much less elegant. It looks like a greyhound but this impression is compensated by its fallen, long and thin ears that hang in elegant folds. The head is long and very narrow, the bridge of the nose is slightly convex and the eyes are dark ocher. The tail is thin and gracefully taken curved like a saber. There is a smooth haired and wire-haired variety.
The color is reddish fawn in various shades or black and cinnamon. The height at withers is 52 to 58 cm in males and 48 to 56 in females.
