The Hellenic hound is a hunter dog that is useful to track and make the prey fly in mountainous land and in plains and to hunt alone or in pack of hounds. It is said its voice is very loud and deep.

It is medium size and in general the physical constitution is less strong than its relatives, the hounds from the North. The head is long, the eyes are dark chestnut, the nose is black and the ears are taken very close to the head. The body is rectangular; the back is slightly arched. The tail is not too long; it is put very high and it is taken curved as a saber. The hair is short, thick and hard to the touch. It must be black with brown patches (black or cinnamon), if possible with a white patch on the chest. The height at withers is 47 to 55 cm in males and 45 to 53 in females. The weight is 17 to 20 kg.
