Despite its more robust size and calmer temperament, the English Springer Spaniel has not become as popular as the cocker. This is because, among other reasons, its aspect is less attractive but the fact that the Springer is used to hunt more commonly than the cocker has influenced undoubtedly in it. In fact, we should compare the Springer with the Setters more than with the cocker, since the Springer is taller, has longer legs and smaller ears than the cocker.
The Setters and the Spaniels descend from the same type of pointing dogs, but while the Setters established faster as a type, the weight was the only decisive factor until the end of the past century to distinguish the cockers from the Springer's.
The English Springer Spaniel is strong, hard-working and medium size. The color of the eyes and nose has to match with the coat. The ears are long, although not so much as the cocker and they are inserted higher on the head. The tail that is moved lively and frequently is put down. The hair is short and bright on the body and on the abundant head, it is very long and slightly wavy in the ears, chest, lower part of the body, back and back part of the legs.
The color is usually white with black or dark brown patches. The height at withers is about 50 cm in males and a bit less in females.
