Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dog Breed

Great Britain

The affectionate cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a royal history that goes back to several centuries. In the English court it had been the favorite dog for a long time especially during the reign of Charles II. It is said the King used to go out invariably accompanied by his collection of always-happy small luxury water-dogs.

In the 19th century when everything that came from the East became popular, the Cavalier King Charles was crossed with the luxury flat-nosed breed that were imported from China and Japan, and during some time it was in risk of disappearing as a pure breed. Officially, the cavalier is a very new breed, and it was not recognized in its country of origin until the decade of 1940-1950. Since then it has attracted many good fans because it is a breed that above all it is nice, docile and friendly. Regarding its physical constitution, it looks like an old water hunting dog in miniature: it is hard working, elegant, vivacious and robust.

There are four varieties of color: black and cinnamon (pure black with brown tone patches), Blenheim (white with chestnut red patches and a white mark on the forehead), tricolor (black and white with small cinnamon patches) and ruby (an intense uniform red color). The standard by which the specimens of this breed are ruled does not specify the height at withers but the weight must be 4.500 to 8.100 kg.
