It is believed that the primitive Braque Français is very old, perhaps one of the oldest bloodhound breeds still kept. During the years, it has contributed for the creation not only of many native breeds, but also of many foreign ones – for instance, it is considered that the Pointer descends from the Braque Français, even when it was modified and greatly perfected by British breeders.

The Braque Français is a strong and noble dog, without giving the impression of weighting a lot. It has chestnut-brown nose and eyes, although the latter ones can be also dark amber. Its look is serious and affectionate. It has the loin slightly curved, and the tail, commonly short-cut, goes lined up together with the back. Conversely, a long tail is acceptable. The coat is short and tight, smoother on the head and ears compared with the rest of the body.

Its color is white, with chestnut-colored spots and other lighter or darker shades. Its height at withers varies from 56 to 65 cm.
