Artois Dog Breed

Artois Dog Breed
Chien d'Artois

The French hound, the Artois dog, could be described either as a long-legged Basset Hound or a lighter Saint Hubert Hound. The head is less than the basset or the Saint Hubert hound, but the type is similar in general, with long ears put down. The tail which is taken high is long and the hair is short, smooth and tricolor.

The height at withers must be 52 to 58 cm.

"Black and White" French Hound Dog Breed
Chien Français Blanc et Noir
This hound –that in 1957 was divided in three varieties per size and color– is a local equivalent of the English Foxhound, much more known internationally. The "black and white" variety is bigger than the "white and orange" and "tricolor" dogs, and, compared to the foxhound the skull is slightly convex and the head is larger and narrow. The tail is much skinnier and prettier. The color is white with great black patches on the head and on the back and smaller roan patches in the rest of the body. On the eyes and sometimes on the cheeks there may be a small fawn patch.

The height at withers is 65 to 72 cm in males and 62 to 68 in females.

"White and Orange" French Hound
Chien Français Blanc et Orange
The white and orange French hound descends basically from the poitevin and the billy but in the canine competitions it is judged applying the same standard as for the "tricolor" French hound; obviously except for the color of the hair that must be white with orange patches on the head and body.
