Artificially Inseminating The Female Dog
Up to now we have talked about mating, and it considering it a fact that the female can travel to where the male lives (or vice versa), in case the male does not live in the same area and, especially, that she lets him mount her without any rejection. But there are many circumstances that require and justify the use of artificial insemination. For example in the case that the male and female, either one or both, reject the other and there is not enough interest, making it difficult for the mounting to take place. In this case it might be necessary to recur to artificial techniques so that fertilization can come about. Other circumstances, like for example the distance between the individuals (or different city or even a different country) and the impossibility of moving from one place to the next, make it advisable to use these methods, as well as in the case of excellent studs that have already passed away, but that have extremely high quality sperm.
Insemination is a simple technique that has already been used for a long time, for example in cattle and that for already some time cynophilia has been successfully used in lots of countries around the world. The first step consists in, logically, making sure that the female is in an optimal state for fertilization and that is done by means of a cytologic test. Obviously, on the other side is necessary to extract the semen from the stud and depending on the cases, either in insemination the female directly or conserve the sperm. The operation of extracting the sperm consists in manually stimulating the stud, first proceeding with the penis massage and win the bulb starts to form, pull the skin back leaving the penis in the open. In most cases, you don't need to do more than press firmly with your thumb and index finger on the bulb in order for the sperm to come out; on other occasions you might also have to apply soft intermittent movements, up and down. The ejaculation process, similar to what I described before, starts with the emission of a see-through prostatic liquid; in the second phase, he will ejaculate the sperm, which is a little that more consistent and whitish; and in the third one, there will be prostatic fluid with hardly any sperm. In normal circumstances and depending on each individual and also the breed, the total amount of ejaculation will be between 1 and 10 mL. After that, it will be necessary to wait for the bold to slowly get smaller so that the penis can retreat and this, also, depends on each individual.
As for the necessary equipment for this operation, all you need is a perfectly sterile container, get and 38.5°C to avoid that the change of temperature outdoors or destroys the semen. Immediately after, you should take a sample of the sperm so that the vet can evaluate the quality and motility, as well as discard any anomaly before conserving it or using it.
