Mosquito Bite on Dog
Recently my dog got a nasty mosquito bite. The mosquito bite on my dog was something that happened after a recent rain. As we all know the mosquitoes always are more active after a rain as there are standing bodies of water for the mother mosquitoes to use as places to lay their eggs. Mosquitoes must have standing water to lay their eggs in as the eggs hatch into little larvae that live in water until they are ready to emerge as flying adults. This is also why in certain states there is such a big deal made about standing water and the lakes, ponds, etc… are sprayed with an anti-mosquito treatment. Normally a mosquito bite on my dog is not such a big thing but this time it was on his face and in a spot that he was able to scratch. So he was scratching it with his paws and then it got infected as you can imagine an infected mosquito bite on my dogs face was not a fun experience for him or for me. I had to take my dog to the veterinarian to have him checked and to get a prescription for some topical cream to help deal with the infection. My veterinarian also told me that like for humans, mosquito bites on dogs can be the cause of serious diseases and that I should be very thankful that my dog has had all of his vaccinations as there really is no telling what my dog could have come down with otherwise. The mosquito bite on my dog has now gone away and the infection was easily dealt with but he now has a scar on his face that is quite ugly but a good reminder to me to watch out for mosquitoes from now on and to take better care of my dog when the mosquitoes are biting. |
