California Dog Bite Law
I
was asking a friend of my about the California dog bite laws as I have an Afghan Hound and what worried that it might not be legal to posses one in California. California like other states has its dog bite laws and since I don’t live there I wasn’t sure. I know that the Afghan Hound is not in the top ten list of the purebreds responsible for the greatest number of dog-bite-related fatalities from 1979 to 1998 according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s study because here is the list of breeds in declining order of fatalities:
- Pit bull-type
- Rottweiler
- German Shepherd
- Husky-type
- Malamute
- Doberman Pinscher
- Chow Chow
- Great Dane
- Saint Bernard
What my friend from California did tell me though is that before deciding to buy a dog, here are some things to keep in mind: Some insurers may charge higher premiums for certain breeds of dogs. Consult with a professional like a veterinarian, or a responsible breeder to find a suitable breed of dogs for your household. Spend time with a dog before buying or adopting it. Use extreme caution when bringing a dog into the home of an infant or toddler. Consider spaying/neutering your dog as this can reduce aggressive tendencies. And according to the California dog bite laws some breeds are required to be spayed/neutered. You also shouldn’t play aggressive games with your dog. And always seek professional advice if the dog starts exhibiting aggressive or undesirable behaviors because if anything should happen you as the dog’s owner would be held responsible and liable which means that you would have to pay a lot of money and could even get jail time on top of that.
