Aggressions between two dogs from the same home

When in the same territory, as vast it could be, lives two or more exemplars, you will have the certainty there will be problems with the kind of manifestations between them, unless the hierarchic positions of each of the exemplars are perfectly defined inside the family structure.

This problem will be accentuated if the exemplars directly implied are of the same gender. In case of a couple, the male exemplar will be the one to dominate at all levels, unless rare occasions. For example when there is an adult female and a young male.

While the positions are perfectly stated for both of them, gender and age will be determinant, there won't be any kind of problem.

Now then, if a conflict would happen because of the same gender of the exemplars or for having similar ages, you will have to adopt the necessary measures to prevent any kind of situation that would wreck the family's harmony, although this is something in which we shouldn't get involved.

The end of this test consists in that the exemplary until now dominated takes control of its new position. The duration of the process is directly related not only by the already quoted conditionings (gender and age), but also in the eagerness to dominate, or of accepting the submission of both of the exemplars.

By natural law, the position of privilege occupied by the dominant exemplar, must go to the until now dominated when the first enters into a declining stage (due to an excess of age, sickness, or others)

The conflict will have place in the instant in which, be it by the general attitudes presented by the other dog or the owners, the dominant animal feels the right to change the status, and the until then dominant animal feels the right to change the status, and until then dominant not wanting to loose the leading position.

You must know that even if the power of strength of the rivals is determinant, at the time to give a solution to the conflict, this is not the only unchaining factor of the problem. The level of character is, without any doubts, the conditioning of more weight. The solution that most of owners choose is to separate the dogs and avoid them to have any contact, but this measure will show ineffective, due that it is materially impossible that both exemplars won't ever be in contact, be it for neglecting or by any other circumstances. No solution is easy, but as hard as it could be, it is recommended to act in a totally opposed way.

You must propitiate in a controlled way, the contact between both exemplars. At least twice a day, and within acceptable limits, you will strengthen the behavior presented by the exemplary who must be the dominant, reprehending him if necessary (for his own good) in a severe way.

Besides the grade in which you do it, the episode mustn't be finished before the dominated externalizes his submission to the rival, not to his owners.

In the same way, and as a measure of association, you can adopt the following:

• Serve his food. First to the dog who has to be the dominant, with the dominated dog tied at a distance of about 12 feet. He will be served afterwards and in absence of the dominant. In a wild environment, the secondary exemplars eat the leftovers of the leader.
• The daily walks that both of the exemplars enjoy, will be done by taking out in first place the domineering exemplary, that will be accompany by the human leader of the pack. The dominated must stay home until the returning of the first and, when his turn to go out comes, he will be attended by an inferior element: a woman or a child. While inside the house, the dominant will get all kinds of attentions. This way, all the privileges he attains will be greater than those that will be given to the dominated.
• At night, the dominant exemplary will be permitted to sleep inside the leader's bedroom, for the dominated: the kitchen, bathroom, etc..

In synthesis, to the dominant exemplar you will give all kinds of attention in presence of the dominated, if necessary you will show a posture of rejection against any intention from the dominated to establish any narrow contact with any of the family elements. You will only congratulate the dominated exemplary when he exteriorize his submission in front of the dominant.

The duration of this process will depend directly on the strict following of this rules and the natural eagerness of the dog who is looking for the leadership with respect to the other exemplary.
