When to use the Citronella Spray

The spray is used in two distinct contexts: obedience training, and re-education of problem behavior. Dog training comprises two parts which often lead to confusion: the part dealing with behavior problems, and the other which creates a response in "re-action" to a command. A dog that "HEELS", .STAYS" and "SITS" can also dig up your flower beds, as a dog that doesn't jump on people and doesn't destroy your property has never heard a command.

1. Obedience Training
A dog that doesn't understand a command should never receive citronella. The spray is used in two specific situations: when the dog has learned that obedience is optional and when he is distracted. The dog understands a command but refuses to execute it, if the indicator for correction "HEY!" did not yield the desired redirection effect you can use the spray surprise. When the dog has demonstrated that he understands the command by executing it properly in different contexts and many consecutive times, you then use the citronella spray only when he doesn't listen. Beforehand, use the SR to show the dog the command.

2. Re-Education
During re-education, use the citronella spray each time the dog displays problem behavior, unless the dog is stressed or scared.
