Never Let the Dog Win

For maximum results, the dog must respond to the command at all times. It is important that the dog understand the command; you cannot expect a dog to obey a command that he doesn't understand or master. You must use the command only if you intend to have it respected. If you abdicate your vigilance by giving a command and giving the dog the prerogative to ignore it, the dog will receive the message that it is acceptable to ignore a command. When the time comes when the dog absolutely must obey your command (like company coming), he will not do it. He will be distracted by the guests and will ignore you completely.
