How to prevent destruction
Here is a set of exercises which must be executed regularly, every day of the week. At the very end, we will introduce a technique for correcting behavior at a distance.
In order to prevent destruction, it is imperative that the dog plays with and chews on his own toys. First 01 all, reward your dog every time he smells or chews on his own toys. Furthermore, you can hide the object and ask the dog to find it. This part of the exercise aims at showing the dog to find the chewable object. Instead of destroying the first piece of furniture he sees. We suggest that you manipulate the object so that your scent is transmitted to it, thus rendering the object more interesting for your dog.
"Good" objects must in no way resemble those destined for use by humans - whether it be on account of the shape or the texture. Typically, these objects are made 01 resistant rubber, are especially designed for dogs in that they are practically indestructible. For example, the kong, the ball, the nylon bone, the rubber square are ideal for dogs. Therefore, one must avoid giving the dog objects which entice generalization, such as: an old shoe. A pair of socks, a piece of clothing, a child's toy, a piece of wood, etc. The following guidelines will ensure success in preventing destruction:
1. Pick up all "unacceptable" objects lying on the floor, close the door to all rooms, cupboards, everywhere the dog is not allowed to go.
2. Buy some dog toys and place them in parts of the house where the dog can go, especially on the rugs, on his personal cushion, on the patio, in the yard.
3. During the learning stage, congratulate your dog each time he sniffs, touches or returns a toy by giving him the SR "SOUND + GOOD!".
4. In order to direct the dog towards his toys, give him his favorite toys only when he finds himself in a restricted area such as his condo, his place, or it he is simply lying quietly on the carpet. Give each toy a name and refer to each toy by its given name. Encourage your dog to sniff it, touch it, and return it on demand. It for any reason the dog touches an "unacceptable" object, give him the VC "HEY!", and give him the citronella spray. Give him his toy and congratulate him only it he gives said toy the required amount of attention.
5. As the dog shows you that he chews his own toys, gradually give him more freedom by opening the door to one room at a time in the house. Make sure that the dog is well conditioned to his toys. Then, leave a few "unacceptable" objects lying around. It the dog approaches one of them and touches it, be ready to reorient the dog's behavior immediately by giving him the VW "HEY'" + SHORT SPRAY. Redirect the dog right away by offering him an "acceptable" toy, and congratulating him (SR "SOUND + GOOD!" when he takes it.
