"DON'T TOUCH" Command

Place one or two "appropriate" objects on the floor, leaving sufficient space in between. Add an "illegal" object such as a book, a shoe, a remote control, an electric wire, a garbage bag, a thumb tack, etc. When the dog goes towards an acceptable object and takes it, give him the SR "SOUND + GOOD!" and play with him. Give him the command "GIVE", and replace the object on the floor. If the dog goes towards the unacceptable object, tell him "DON'T TOUCH". II the dog goes for it anyway, give him the VW "HEY” + SHORT SPRAY". II he picks up the object, give him the VW "HEY” + SHORT SPRAY" againIn an authentic situation where you see your dog picking up a shoe, give him the command "DON'T TOUCH". Congratulate him (SR "SOUND + GOOD!") if he doesn't return towards the object in the two minutes that follow. Practice this exercise every day by using all sorts of forbidden objects. He will quickly learn to recognize them, and will avoid them when he hears "DON'T TOUCH". Place a few objects all over the house, and watch for the dog's reactions. Practice when your dog thinks you are absent. Trigger the spray without the command, to make him understand that the object is always off limits, even if you are out of sight.

Suggestions:

• Put a little bit of citronella on the forbidden objects. The developed sense of smell in dogs will allow your pet to recognize the smell and will stay away from the object.
• When dogs have a tendency to sniff your guests' genitals, the command "DON'T TOUCH" is particularly appreciated. Give the command "SIT / STAY, and ask your guest to allow your dog to sniff him. As soon as his nose approaches the genitals, tell him "DON'T TOUCH". Give the command "COME" when a dog takes an acceptable in his mouth.

If you wish, it is possible to educate the dog to recognize certain objects and fetch them. However, it is not the object of this exercise. For this particular trick, we refer you to Section 5.
